Companies like VAPESTICK don't need to make claims that electronic cigarettes are healthier than combustible tobacco, given that the scientific community is frequently making the case for us anyway. The latest example is that of a tobacco control expert who recently wrote an excellent piece in The Guardian. Her article was in direct response to a blog that The Guardian had published previously, from an American blogger living in Scotland.

UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies Deputy Director, Linda Bauld, directly answered each of the criticisms that had been levelled against electronic cigarettes by the blogger Nash Riggins, who had asserted that e-cigarettes are not safer than smoking, and that the nicotine in e-cigarettes is dangerous, and that e-cigarettes should be banned from use in public places.

Linda Bauld used her article to summarily address each argument with clinical evidence to back up her points. Although we will not go through the full details of each argument here, we will say that Bauld did a very good job of demonstrating why the arguments against e-cigarettes as a tobacco alternative do not hold up at all to scientific scrutiny. She went so far as to say that using e-cigarettes is 'safer than continued smoking." And if they are safer, one can reasonably conclude they must be healthier too. If one is not happy with that terminology, one could instead say 'less damaging'.

It is important to note that Bauld is not just a scientist who has a cursory understanding of tobacco control issues. She is a professor of Health Policy at the University of Stirling, as well as a former Government advisor on tobacco control, and Chairperson of the NICE Tobacco Harm Reduction Group. This is a lady who knows what she's talking about. As a scientist too, she is someone willing to look at the hard scientific data, rather than just rely on media hype.

Your Tobacco Alternative

It should be fairly obvious that the strongest thing e-cigarettes have going for them is the fact that they do not produce tobacco smoke. Why is that so important? Because it is the toxic chemicals and carcinogens found in tobacco smoke that kills people. It is not the nicotine. Nicotine has been scientifically proven to be largely harmless when used appropriately, which is why we can find so many medically approved 'nicotine replacement products' on the market.

Are electronic cigarettes healthier than tobacco? Linda Bauld certainly seems to think so, and she is far from alone. The number of highly respected medical professionals and scientists all reaching the exact same conclusion is growing every day. Vaping deserves your consideration if you still currently smoke tobacco. To ignore e-cigarettes as a viable tobacco alternative would be doing yourself a disservice.
